During the lengthy appellate process, oral argument is the only time the lawyers on the case are able to speak directly to the judges making the decision — and then for only a few brief minutes. Rarely is the argument simply a speech from the lawyers to the judges. Instead, a good argument is a conversation in which the panel engages the lawyers in a series of questions about the issues in the case.
